Cook Your Catch: A Memorable Day in Belize

Updated: Jul 21

Imagine starting your day with the thrill of the hunt and ending it with a delicious meal featuring your own fresh catch. That’s exactly what you get on a “Cook Your Catch” tour in beautiful Belize. This experience combines the excitement of fishing with the joy of enjoying a fresh, personally caught seafood meal prepared in traditional Belizean style. Join me as I recount our unforgettable adventure on one of these incredible tours.

Setting Sail

Our day began early at the coast of Hopkins Village. The air was crisp, and the sky painted with hues of orange and pink as the sun started to rise. We met with the captain/ fisherman my uncle Lennox Maximo also known as Big Grouper. My uncle welcomed us aboard his fishing boat. After a quick safety briefing and a rundown of the day’s plan, we set off into the calm, turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.

The Thrill of the Catch

Our first stop was to catch bait near the mangroves. My uncle Lennox is an expert fisherman, and he knows how to spot the sardines. He opened his cast net and threw it out into the ocean. The anticipation built up as we watched him pull the net towards the boat. He only threw the net once, and we got enough bait for fishing. After getting the baits, we set out to his fishing spots. He cut the baits and prepped each line. We threw our lines into the ocean, and it wasn't long before we felt the first tug on our lines. As we fished, we cheered each other when a nice-sized fish got caught. The excitement was palpable as we pulled in our catches, each fish a testament to the rich biodiversity of Belize’s waters.

Cooking the Catch

After safely storing our morning's catch on ice, we headed to Bread and Butter Caye to prepare the fresh fish. My uncle expertly cooked the fish with fresh veggies on the grill. It was here that I realized my uncle had great culinary experience. The sides for the fish were coleslaw and rice and beans. The fish was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, with unique spices enhancing its natural taste.

We sat under the shade of palm trees, with the sound of waves gently lapping at the shore, and enjoyed our freshly prepared meal. We shared stories and laughter, feeling a deep connection to the place. The experience was fantastic! After lunch, we relaxed and sat on the hammock, taking a little nap.

Reflecting on the Experience

As the day came to a close, we headed back to Hopkins Village, with full stomachs and hearts brimming with unforgettable memories. The Cook Your Catch tour was more than just a fishing trip; it was an immersion into the culture, traditions, and natural beauty of Belize. From the thrill of the catch to the joy of sharing a meal made with our own hands, every moment was a reminder of the richness of this incredible destination.

If you ever find yourself in Belize, I highly recommend embarking on a Cook Your Catch adventure. It’s a unique way to experience the country’s stunning marine environments, learn about local culinary traditions, and enjoy some of the freshest seafood you’ll ever taste.
