Our Day Trip from Hopkins Village to Placencia: A Perfect Day in Southern Belize

Hopkins is a small, charming village nestled on the coast of the Caribbean Sea. While staying in one of the cozy hotels in Hopkins, you might also want to spend a day exploring Placencia, just a short trip away. Known for its relaxed vibe, beautiful beaches, and lively local culture, Placencia offers a fun escape for anyone staying in Hopkins.

Getting There

Getting from Hopkins to Placencia is an adventure all on its own. It’s a one-hour drive along the Southern Highway, and trust me, you’ll want to keep your camera handy! The route winds through lush jungle landscapes, quiet villages, and there are plenty of glimpses of the sea along the way.

Things to Do in Placencia

1. Stroll Down the Placencia Sidewalk

Placencia’s famous sidewalk is titled “world’s narrowest main street,” but don’t let the size fool you—this place is packed with charm! From tiny art galleries to quaint shops and inviting cafes, the sidewalk is perfect for a leisurely stroll. It’s one of those places where you can easily lose track of time while exploring, which is the best travel experience for me.

2. Relax on the Beach

There’s nothing quite like the beaches in Placencia. The soft sand, the gentle waves, the endless horizon—if you’re anything like me, you’ll find it hard to leave. We brought beach towels, sunscreen, and a book and settled in for a few hours. There’s a magic in the simplicity of relaxing here that makes you appreciate the beauty of Belize even more.

3. Savor the Local Cuisine

Placencia is a paradise for food lovers. You have everything from freshly caught seafood to classic Belizean dishes; each spot has its own personality. Barefoot Bar was a highlight for its beachside vibe and fun atmosphere, while Tutti Frutti is a must if you have a sweet tooth. Their gelato is hands-down the best treat on a warm day.

4. Visit a Local Art Gallery

Placencia has an incredible arts scene, and wandering into a few galleries was a beautiful surprise. The artwork, from paintings to handmade crafts, has this vibrant energy that reflects the spirit of Belize. Each piece tells a story, a unique way to connect with the culture here.

Heading Back to Hopkins

After a day filled with adventure and relaxation, we headed back to Hopkins, just in time to catch the sunset on the drive. If you’re up for it, a quiet dinner at a local eatery in Hopkins is the perfect way to end the day. We left Placencia with full hearts (and bellies!) and a new appreciation for the beauty of Southern Belize.
